• Throbbing pain in the anal area, often severe
• Swelling around the anus
• Redness and burning around the anus
• Painful bowel movement
• Fever and chills

• Infection in the existing fissure in ano
• Infection of the anal gland secondary to blockage of the anal duct due to constipation
• Poor hygiene or trauma to the anal area can also increase the risk of developing an abscess
• Conditions that can increase the risk of developing a perianal abscess include inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, and weak immune systems

Perianal Abscess is a condition where there is painful collection of pus in and around the anal canal. This happens mostly because of infection of the anal glands which are situated in between the anal sphincters.

The abscess can vary in size and severity, and can be classified as superficial or deep depending on the location.

This can be a prior stage of developing fistula in ano.

Treatment typically involves incision and drainage of the abscess to remove pus and infected material.

Generally, these abscesses are because of the infected anal glands, so excision of anal glands is very important for radical cure of the disease.

Most of the cases, there is an internal opening of the abscesses in the anal canal, which if left untreated, can lead to recurrence and subsequent fistula formation, which will require second surgery.

We aim to locate the internal opening and excise it, to avoid recurrence of abscess and fistula formation which typically happens in first surgery only.

• Long standing abscess may result in mild to moderate fever, extreme pain & discomfort, and extension of the disease in the perianal region
• If left untreated, a perianal abscess can spread to surrounding structure or it may spread deep inside the perineum. It may burst into the rectum or it may burst on the perianal skin to form fistula, which can be difficult to treat and may require complex surgery
